SHOWCASE: L.I.E.S.

L.I.E.S.
Captained by Ron Morelli, New York label L.I.E.S. (acronym for Long Island Electrical Systems) has in the last 3 years built an impressive catalogue and is already an established international benchmark for quality techno. Its list of artists includes Legowelt, Svengalisghost, Vereker, Delroy Edwards, Xosar, Bookworms, Steve Moore and Marcos Cabral, among many others. L.I.E.S. releases house, techno and lo-fi acid, which is distorted, saturated, unbalanced and noisy. An outlandish, attitude exuding sound, which has forced trade press to invent some of the most bizarre genre labelling in recent memory like “insider dance" or "outsider house". Over and above genre labelling, it is important to understand the philosophy of the label, a combination of daring electronica with a rebellious punk DIY approach: visceral spontaneity, unpretentious, avoiding overproduction and boundaries. The majority of its 12-inch releases sell out quickly, so a good method to explore its catalogue is via two compilations, the essential "American Noise" and "Music for Shut- Ins".

Ron Morelli

(L.I.E.S. / US)
Noisy club music
During his formative years, New York’s Ron Morelli was a young man with many musical interests, which can be summarized as: hardcore, hardcore and more hardcore. Everything changed when he began studying in upstate NY, where he discovered a new world of dance music, focusing on underground labels such as Holland’s Bunker Records. Years later, influenced by vinyl culture, Chicago house, noise rock and the DIY (Do It Yourself) punk attitude, Morelli founded experimental electronic label L.I.E.S. (Long Island Electrical Systems). In just three years, the label built an impressive catalogue that, at the time of writing, holds host to more than 60 releases. In 2013 Morelli released his first solo album "Spit" on Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions label (the man behind Prurient and Vatican Shadow). It is an album that showcases a distinct difference to releases on L.I.E.S., a darker, heavy and industrial sound, much less focused on the dance floor.
